Chemical Composition

Ductile iron manhole covers are primarily composed of ductile iron, which typically includes the following elements:

 

- Carbon (C): The carbon content ranges from 3.0% to 4.0%, though some standards suggest a narrower range of 3.6% to 3.8%. Carbon is the principal element in cast iron, significantly influencing both its mechanical and physical properties.

- Silicon (Si): Silicon content varies between 1.8% and 3.2%, with some standards indicating a range of 2.0% to 3.0%. Silicon enhances the fluidity of cast iron and its resistance to thermal cracking.

- Manganese (Mn), Phosphorus (P), Sulfur (S): These elements collectively make up no more than 1.5% or 3.0% of the composition, depending on specific standards and requirements. They have a notable impact on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the cast iron.

- Rare Earth Elements and Magnesium (Mg): These act as nodulizing agents during the production of ductile iron, promoting the formation of spherical graphite within the iron. This process significantly improves the strength, ductility, and toughness of the iron.

 

Essential Properties

- Mechanical Properties: Through spheroidization and inoculation treatments, ductile iron forms spherical graphite, effectively enhancing its mechanical properties. This particularly improves its ductility and toughness, making the strength of ductile iron comparable to, or even surpassing, that of certain grades of carbon steel.

- Physical Properties: Ductile iron manhole covers boast excellent wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and resilience to both high and low temperatures. These properties ensure that ductile iron manhole covers maintain stable performance and a long service life, even in harsh environments.
